The LSU Fighting Tigers made too many mistakes to overcome in their opening loss to the Florida State Seminoles, 24-23. The game, played before more than 80,000 fans at Caesars Super Dome in New Orleans, featured two marquee teams on the national scene.

First-year LSU coach Brian Kelly named Jayden Daniels the starter for quarterback just before kickoff on Sunday night. Daniels had a spectacular run in the first series, and moved the ball with his legs, but was too late on many of his throws, leading to frustrated receivers, namely All-American Kashon Boutte, who finished with two catches for 20 yards.

After a slow first half, Daniels finally began to show his arm strength in the late third quarter and early fourth with a late touchdown with 1 second left on the clock.

Unfortunately, kicker  Damian Ramos’ extra-point attempt failed and the Seminoles escaped with a 24-23 win in New Orleans.

“We got into a better rhythm certainly in the second half, Jayden did,” Kelly told reporters after the game. “He’s a threat.”

Daniels finished 25-of-34 passing for 209 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. He also led the Tigers with 114 yards on the ground off 16 carries.
