New Orleans House Floats: What To Know

    3 Min Read

With Mardi Gras at the mercy of the COVID-19 pandemic, New Orleans residents are once again being encouraged to decorate their homes as floats. This concept of “house floats” proved to be popular last year and is shaping up to be in 2022.

But you may have some questions about house floats, such as what they are exactly and how to find them. In this article, I’m going to tell you all about “house floats.”

Everything You Wanted To Know About House Floats

House floats are a spinoff from the mobile floats that used to ride up and down the streets during Mardi Gras. The house float movement has found an eager fan base as visitors to the city get to tour the homes on a house float map.

Local musicians and other artists have also benefitted from house floats because they have been able to use their talents as on-site entertainment.

Many house floats also have been involving in fundraising for New Orleans causes. Let’s take a look more closely at the house float movement and its origins.

What Is A House Float In New Orleans?

A float house is a typical shotgun house on stilts, a standard and traditional home design in New Orleans. The homes that have been built over the past several years are part of the affordable housing movement to keep longtime New Orleans residents in the city.

The float house can trace its origins to Megan Boudreaux, founder of the Krewe of House Floats. In just over a year, more than 30 subkrewes have popped up in neighborhoods around the city.

These organizations aren’t just decorating homes, but are giving back in a big way by putting together food drives, community pantries and other charitable efforts.

More than 2,600 area homeowners have registered their house floats, according to Boudreaux’s Krewe of House Floats.

Where Are The House Floats In New Orleans?

House floats can be found in nearly every section of New Orleans. Some of the more notable house floats include the “Little Shop of 2020 Horrors” house float located in Algiers.

Blonde, Violet & Brown: What Are The Best Hair Dyes?

    7 Min Read

Dying your hair is one of those commitments you make that takes a lot of courage and determination. The good thing today is that adding color to your har is easier than ever before.

In many cases, all you have to do is shampoo it in and you have a nice blonde or violet color that will last a long time. But how long? We’re going to talk about that and more.

In this article, we’re going to list the best hair dyes as well as what are the top hair dye brands as well as what to know about side effects.

    In This Article:

Let’s talk a little about the best hair dyes. What you want to do is choose a color that is close to your natural hair color.

    Best Hair Dye Brands

First off, let’s take a look at some of the best hair dye brands based on customer reviews. These are in no particular order, but rather based on Amazon reviews:

    • Clairol
    • Garnier
    • Revlon
    • Madison
    • Vidal Sassoon
    • L’Oreal

Of course, a brand is only as good as your experience with it. With that being said, let’s cover some of the best hair dyes on the market for DIY colorists.

    Best Violet Hair Dyes

One of the top ones in sales is the Garnier Nutrisse permanent color cream. This particular dye is long-lasting and will leave your hair violet with a golden hue.

    Best Hair Dye

The truth is that the best hair dye for you is one that doesn’t break you out. Try it out on a small portion of your hair a day or two before you use it to see if you’re allergic.

After you strap up with your gloves (yes, gloves) and protect your shoulders and floor from dye, you’ll want to get the following supplies ready:

    • Small bowl
    • Brush
    • Comb
    • Sink

After you’ve prepared your supplies, it’s time to dye your hair. Here are the best products, according to real-life reviewers who’ve used them:

I usually have grey hair that is why i always need color stuff and I found this.easy to mixed and the smell is not bad.a bit of menthol feel unlike others coloring stuff feels like burning the scalp. So its very good.”

Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Hair Color Creme, 63 Light Golden Brown (Brown Sugar) – $6.97

    Buy Now

Here’s what one Amazon reviewer says about Garnier Nutrisse hair dye: “Fades fairly quickly, but beautifully. Hair was bleached beforehand. Will probably purchase again. Doesn’t transer too much after 2-3 washes. Was prettty purple when initially dyed, faded to pink, then rose gold, then to a light gold with a rose tone.”

What Is The Best Hair Dye Without Side Effects?

Many hair dye products cause unwanted side effects from rashes to hair loss. One of the main reasons for this is that ammonia is a main ingredient in many hair dyes.

For that reason, what you want in a hair dye is one without ammonia or peroxide. Look for brands that are certified organic and are 100% natural for your hair.

That way, you won’t have to worry about any side effects.

    Best Purple Hair

If you want to try grape shades in your head, here is the best purple hair dye:

Here’s what one reviewer says about ONC Natural Colors hair dye: “Yes this is PPD free and it is natural as it gets. The reason its much healthier than any other color in the market is because its pH value is around 8.5.”

    Buy Now

Here’s what one reviewer says about L’Oreal Paris hair dye: “This is the best hair color for me. It’s brown but not too dark, so my grays look like I got caramel highlights. I bought this in store once, but have not been able to find it since, so I’m glad Amazon had it. My hair is shiny and healthy. The only thing is I would recommend everyone to purchase a box of gloves to use instead of the ones that come with this kit, as they are very cheap and not stretchy so they may not fit. I actually asked my doctor and she gave me a few pairs at no charge.”

L’Oreal Paris Hair Color Root Cover Up Hair Dye Red 2 Ounce (Pack of 2) (Packaging May Vary) – $16

    Buy Now

Here’s what one reviewer says about L’Oreal Paris Hair Color Root Cover Up Hair Dye: “You literally have to spray most of the top of your hair because the spray is strong. You cannot spray around your face, side and hairlines without getting it on your skin, It is hard to remove from skin. You cannot spray it onto a hair coloring brush and brush it on; it just stays on the brush.”

    Final Thoughts

If you’re going to color your hair, please read reviews about the product so you know what you’re getting. The last thing you need is a bald (purple) head with a rash!

The New Orleans hair industry is one of the largest in the Southeast, with more than 8 million people getting groomed each month.

  • New Orleans Pilot Parklet program how to apply

New Orleans Extends Program To Help Restaurants And Bars

    3 Min Read

The City of New Orleans recently announced that it is extending fee waivers for the Parklet Pilot Program through Dec. 31, 2021.

The program has been in place as a reaction to the restrictions mandated because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Orleans Extends Fee Waivers For Pilot Parklet Program

Under the program, which was launched in the fall of 2020, restaurants are able to incorporate Curbside Dining and Parklets Pilot into their dining experiences to keep staff and customers safe.

According to the city, “This pilot is set up to enable restaurants and bars throughout the city to expand their operations into the public, on-street parking spaces. The pilot will run for as long as there are COVID-related occupancy restrictions in restaurants and bars.   After that, the City is expecting to launch a permanent parklet program. Details regarding the transfer from pilot to permanent parklet program will be released as the permanent program is developed, but it will require re-permitting.”

Our small businesses — and particularly our restaurants and bars — are the backbones of New Orleans community and culture, and we know that they have been deeply impacted by COVID. With this permit, almost every restaurant and bar in the city will be able to have some outdoor space, which we know are safer than being indoors. The launch of the Parklet permit citywide is another example of how the City of New Orleans is creatively utilizing its assets to support our businesses, create safe spaces for residents, and activate our neighborhoods,” said Jeff Schwartz, Director, Office of Economic Development.

What Is The New Orleans Pilot Parklet Program?

The New Orleans Pilot Parklet Program has been set up to create safe opportunities for restaurants and bars to operate safely in the city.

Here are some things to know about the program.

    • Restaurants and bars are eligible to apply for the permit during the pilot.
    • Fees are waived during the pilot at least through Dec. 31, 2020.
    • Pilot will run for as long as there are COVID-related occupancy restrictions in restaurants and bars.
    • The City can provide barricades on a first-come, first-served basis, after which businesses will need to supply their own approved barriers. Barriers will be an eligible expense under the upcoming round of Outdoor Dining grants.
    • Outdoor Dining grants of up to $2,000 will be made available to interested businesses beginning Nov. 2, 2020.

How To Apply For The New Orleans Pilot Parklet Program

New Orleans restaurants and bars can apply for the Pilot Parklet program through the City’s One Stop Shop, and by email at outdoordining@nola.gov. Review the Pilot Program application requirements and a step-by-step overview of the process at the City’s website here, and view a copy of the application here.

    Final Word

New Orleans needs its restaurants more than ever right now. And the only way to do that safely and responsibly is to cooperate together with business, city and health officials.

Remember that waiters and waitresses across the industry make less than $3 a day unless they receive tips, so please show your gratitude for your service.

  • How to tell the signs of a flood car

How To Tell A Flood Vehicle: 5 Easy Steps

    3 Min Read

If you live in Louisiana or anywhere around the Gulf Coast, you well know the dangers of a flood vehicle.  It may look OK on the outside, but under the engine and inside the car you may have a lemon.

Many dealers may have flood vehicles on their lots and not even know it, but there’s a way you can tell.

How Do You Tell That A Used Car Is A Flood Car?

This article will point out several ways you’ll be able to tell a flood vehicle. You don’t necessarily need to have an eagle eye, but you do have to be able to spot the visible signs of flood, namely rust. But there’s more to it than that.

Look For These 5 Signs On A flood Vehicle

Hurricanes are a yearly occurrence in Louisiana and Florida, so those two states especially have to be on guard against a vehicle market that contains flood-damaged vehicles.

You need to especially be on guard against vehicles written off as “salvage” or “totaled.” Their titles might not disclose that they’ve been in a flood. But here’s how you can tell:

    1. Check the VIN

You can use a free VIN checker to find to find out the history of the vehicle you’re interested in. A VIN (vehicle identification number) will list the historical data about the car, including the status of its title.

VehicleHistory.com offers a free VIN check so you can find out about a vehicle really quick.

    2. Check Under The Hood

Open the hood of the vehicle and look for signs of rusted metal around the engine. The wirings will also show a corrosion or faded color that could indicate flooding.

A glimpse at the gauges under the hood like the water meter and oil filter will also show water signs.

    3. Inspect The Car’s Interior

Look inside the car to see if the fabric on the seats is faded or discolored in any way. Also, you’ll want to pay attention to the dashboard and look for cracks (this could also be caused by heat).

The seatbelts may have crud inside the fasteners, so that’s another sign to look out for.

    4. Get The Car Examined

See if you can get a mechanic to look at the vehicle for flood damage. The mechanic shouldn’t give the car a simple once over, he or she should thoroughly examine under the car’s hood, the interior and trunk.

If the mechanic says the car does not have any flood damage, there’s still one way you can find out…

    5. Ask The Car’s Owner

If you ask the car’s owner if it’s been in a flood, more than likely they will tell you the truth. If they’re not honest, then they will be committing fraud, which is a felony.

Because they have a major incentive to be honest, a quick question about whether the car has been in a flood should suffice in most cases.

    Final Word

Flood-damaged vehicles are the biggest problem facing people who are shopping for cars. But you can protect yourself.

Remember to check out the car’s service history. You can do this by either calling the dealership where the car has been serviced or by asking if the previous owner kept the records.

And don’t forget about the free VIN check, which will save you a lot of time.

here’s what one parent says about Louis Armstrong Park: “I really liked the artwork in the park and it was also beautiful there. I wish there was a splash pad for the kids somewhere in the park though…it is sooooooo very hot in New Orleans and it would be nice if we could cool off somewhere. A little playground would be nice too. The kids still enjoyed themselves running around and looking at the statues. I sat under a tree on the grass to try and cool down.”

Here’s what one park lover says about Confetti Park: “Cute, little neighborhood park. The gate can be a bit tricky/difficult, but my toddler enjoyed playing here. There isn’t too much shade over the playground area, but there are plenty of seating areas and trees throughout.”

    Crescent Park

Here’s what one parkgoer says about Crescent Park: “Very nice park with clean, well kept grounds. It is a cool place to see tucked between a set of train tracks and the Mississippi River. Superb for running, walking and features a decent sized Dog park so the pups can get their hooman(s) out of the house! Definitely worth stopping by on a nice afternoon.”
