Movie star Will Smith’s latest movie, Emancipation, is currently streaming on Apple TV+. Keep reading to learn everything we know about the project.

In the fall of 2022, Smith traveled to Louisiana to film the big-budget movie in the backwoods of the Thibodaux area. Emancipation debuted in theaters December 2.

Where Was Emancipation Filmed?

Emancipation began filming in Atlanta, Georgia, but the producers, including Smith, pulled out after Georgia’s controversial voting law, which was seen to quell the rights of black people.

Director Antoine Fuqua and Smith announced that they were going to move production to Louisiana, which was where the events in the film actually took place.

“At this moment in time, the Nation is coming to terms with its history and is attempting to eliminate vestiges of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice,” Fuqua and Smith said in a statement. “We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access.”

“Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state,” they added.
